Escondido Beach, Malibu, July 1993

With the sun just beginning to warm the Pacific and the hum of the ocean in the background, The Seven prepared for their Season 2 shoot—today’s mission set against the raw beauty of Escondido Beach.

The Seven emerged from their trailers which were lined along Pacific Coast Highway near Geoffrey’s. As the cast gathered, Matt, the PA led the cast towards the narrow public access staircase just off PCH that led between the bluff’s massive mansions before sharply descending towards the strip of sand that stood in for Breakers Bay.

Following close behind was a small contingent of hair and makeup artists as well as various assistants toting The Seven’s personal effects like sunglasses, mister bottles, cigarettes and the like.

Today’s schedule encompassed shooting the new Season 2 opening titles and a few promo photos for the show’s Season 2 press kit at Geoffrey’s once again standing in for El Farallon.

Unlike the Season 1 opening titles showing The Seven draped in gowns, tuxes and diamonds projecting glamour and glitz, the Season 2 opening titles were envisioned to be a bit more esoteric and abstract.

Today, the girls were dressed in wetsuits while the guys wore tuxes. The girls were due to be shot in the water on surfboards paddling into shore and then emerging from the water like sirens rising from the sea to greet and pose with the boys who themselves were being shot in a noir-dish black and white staring pensively out towards the water - the whole thing meant to create a dark and mysteriously sexy California beach vibe.

While the director’s vision was understood by The Seven, it didn’t change the fact that the girls were none to pleased about jumping into the frigid Pacific this early in the morning, wetsuits notwithstanding.

Caleb Deshane and his assistant director, Tyler had returned to shoot the premiere for Season 2. Caleb and Tyler were crouched over a monitor off to the side under a small tent discussing some details of the upcoming shot.

Tyler emerged from the tent calling out, “Ok, team, let’s do a run-through,” as the hair and makeup folks began scurrying to tend to the cast, their bags slung over their shoulders. The hair and makeup artists began rapidly styling the guys’ hair into place while furiously applying anti-shine powder and foundation to keep the glare of the sun off their faces.

As soon as the hair stylists and makeup artists moved off the boys, Tyler held up a light meter for Caleb checking the screen and calling out light readings to the cameraman.
